Mairi-Claire’s visual art practice begins with spontaneous, absent-minded drawing, the underrated doodle.

She is curious about what happens when these instinctive gestures collide with similarly overlooked materials and surfaces.

Working through layering, carving and excavation, her current work transforms fleeting drawings into physical objects. Marks are embedded into surfaces rather than simply placed on top, allowing images to emerge through the process of making.

Her recent work explores grout, carpet and found surfaces as materials that hold memory, accident and possibility.
